The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) acquired two state ministers, appointed by Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn. According to the information that Capital obtained Hirut Zemene, Director General of Business Diplomacy at MoFA, became the second female state minister in MoFA’s history.
Hirut is one of the two new state ministers assigned on November 28. During imperial times Yodit Emeru served as the first woman deputy for MoFA, one of the oldest public institutions in the modern Ethiopian government system.
Wondimu Asaminew (Amb) is the other new state minister for MoFA.
Wondimu served as Ethiopian Ambassador to Somalia until his appointment to the new position. During his latest cabinet reshuffle Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn assigned Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Workneh replaced Tedros Adhanom (PhD), who came aboard after the death of Meles Zenawi in 2012. Tedros is competing to be the director of the World Health Organization. The two state ministers Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie, who is a prominent diplomat, and Regassa Kefale were assigned to ambassador positions.
Sources at MoFA said that the ambassador positions in Egypt, Somalia and some countries in West Africa are open for new appointments.
