Defending Ethiopian Premier League champion Saint George will square off against its Seychelles counterpart Cote D’Or in the 2017 Total African Champions League preliminary round fixtures, in a home and away match between the two, while Cup holders Mekelakya face Young Sports Academy of Cameroon for the Confederation Cup preliminary round.
For the second consecutive season Ethiopian Champions Saint George travels to Seychelles this time facing defending champions Cote D’Or at Stade d’Amitie for the preliminary round away first leg. The last time Saints encountered humble side Saint Michael for a 4-1 aggregate trashing thus it is likely Martin Nooy’s side will easily sail through to the next round where big names are crowding. Though Saint George is currently on top of the Premier League Table via goal differences its record of eleven points from six matches is hardly something to cheer about. If the home side wins against Cote D’Or, it faces the winner of Congo Brazzaville’s champions Ac Leopold versus Cameroon’s side UMC de Loum for the second preliminary qualification round. The winner of that will earn a place in the group stage that brings 16 sides following Caf’s new format.
The Army side sits 8th in the table with eight points from six matches. It entertains, sixth place, with 18 points from 12 matches, Cameroon’s Young Sports Academy. Though established in 2004 it has it’s a 1,000 capacity Stade de Njombe stadium for a home and is a youth favorite. The first leg in Addis Ababa takes place February 3-5 then the return leg is a week later. The winner of the two is to confront the mighty North African side CS Sefaxien.
