Saints through, Mekelakya packs out early

Saint George made it through the 2017 Caf  Total Champions League first round qualification campaign after demolishing its Seychelles counterpart Cote D’or in a 5-0 aggregate score line over two games. The Army side Mekelakya’s attempt to go past the first qualification round remained elusive for the third season in a row.

Back from a 2-0 away victory with both goals from Salhadin Said, the away return leg in Hawassa International stadium was an uphill battle for the visitors. Once again Salhadin with the opener after a superb back hill assist from Adane Girma, then Adane himself from the spot kick followed by defender Aschalew Tamene’s header, the game ended 3-0 thus the aggregate score line stood at 5-0.

Qualification to the next round means a heavy task for  Dutch head Coach Martinus Nooy. AC Leopard odi Dolisie of the Congo eliminated UMS de Luma of Cameroon and is a strong opponent. The next round which will feature the 15 winners on Sunday, the 8 qualifiers from Saturday and the 9 seeded teams in the first round, will be played during the weeks of March 10-12 and 17-19.

Young Sports Academy of Cameroon turned around the first leg away 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ethiopian Counterpart Mekelakya to go through the next stage after 2-0 away victory. Though an entertaining first leg home match yet with only a single goal on the score board, Cup holders Mekelakya packed out early in the qualification after a 2-1 aggregate loss.
