May Day or International Labor Day is celebrated all over the world, almost; the significant exceptions being the USA and Canada. May Day (May 1st) commemorates the killings of workers gathered at the Chicago Haymarket to advocate an eight hours day. It took place on May 4, 1886. The US refused to acknowledge May Day as an international workers day and instead instituted the first Monday of September as the US ‘labor day’, fashioning the idea of an extended weekend.
The 20th century saw the rise and fall of the proletariat. A century ago (1917) the Bolshevik Revolution took over the Russian empire. Its intention was to set up a worker’s state. In the early part of the last century the teachings of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels were thoroughly studied and variously interpreted, but the core values remained the same; to bring about a society where there will be no exploitation of ‘man by man.’ The growing popularity of the various socialisms of the early 20th century gave impetus to the formation of the welfare state in the west. Social democracy became the rage in Western Europe, while Eastern Europe pursued the socialist dream along with the USSR. Gradually the built-in rigidity of Sovietism became dysfunctional and had to be abandoned. Maoism was also diluted to make room for capitalist exploits. While these social experimentations were taking place in the realm of global political economy, technology continued to progress in leaps and bounds.
Under the strict management of capital or the states under its jurisdiction, technology became the final arbiter of collective social existence. That is, ones a particular technology is unleashed over collective humanity, it became imperative to adjust to its inhuman logic. And adjust we did, so profusely! Today without the various man-made gadgets and operations of modernity, human beings will be at a loss as to how to live and function. The techno sphere has now assumed full command over the life of the dominant species! Psychopaths who are basically/essentially without emotions are very enthusiastic about the dominance of the techno sphere, as they get to use all sorts of tools to undermine the motive forces and vibrant energies of organic humanity, which these sickos abhor. Intensive surveillance of all and sundry is already established as a weapon of choice to crush liberating progressive ideas of social mavericks. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) are being manufactured as if there is no tomorrow. However, from the perspective of the average global sheeple, developing tendencies in the world of turbo capitalism or crony capitalism don’t seem very appealing, to say the least.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) based robotics and automations are bound to take out a good chunk of employment opportunities from the world of the working stiff. Today robots effectively and efficiently assemble all sorts of vehicles. Until very recently the global auto industry used to employ millions of skilled labor. Automation has also replaced plenty of white-collar jobs. What is even more surprising is; it is not only labor that is facing serious challenges. Capital itself is witnessing a collapse in the rate of return. Today capital can hardly find a decent rate of return/profit from productive activities anywhere on earth. That is why it (capital) has shifted its emphasis to financial speculation. Currently financialization is the main stay of capital. The old externalization of cost is also not going to be an easy affair, particularly as the global sheeple becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of unbridled capitalism. All in all, the future doesn’t look good, both to capital as well as its old nemesis-labor. Nonetheless, the important question still remains: if capital is not able to reproduce, i.e., continue the accumulation process (even when it is massively leveraging the nation-states as well as all the powerful international organizations) and at the same time if labor is also without employment, then how is the prevailing capitalist world order to survive?
To be sure, capitalism will not have any qualm if demand can be created from utter destruction. This is one outlet on which it has been relying on for centuries. There is always the possibility of destroying what is already built, so that a new market can be created in the follow up reconstruction. To many a gullible sheeple, this sounds ridiculous, but history shows it is one of the inalienable features of capital, particularly during its monopolistic phase. The deep states of the world system seriously and continuously contemplate such unappetizing moves (destructions.) Unless the global sheeple makes a stop to this whole nonsense, it won’t be long before we face major global wars all over again.
“Workers of the World, Unite” is now transformed (according to an MSM mouthpiece) to “Workers of the World, Forget It”!
Ode to the proletariat:
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we’ll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They’ll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E’er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.
