Europe Day celebrated with Children’s Race

Ethiopia celebrated  Europe Day with races for children. This year was the 10th edition of EU Children Races where the European Union in Ethiopia and Great Ethiopian Run partner to celebrate Europe Day. The races took place in four age categories for boys and girls (Under 5, 8, 11 and 14). Haile Gebreselassie founder and Board Chairman of Great Ethiopian Run, Terhi Lehtinen, Deputy Ambassador of European Union and Hiruy Bahiretebeb, Children Protection Director at MoWCA; Jozef Cibula Ambassador of Slovakia, Mette Thygesen, Ambassador of Denmark and Paul Evans Deputy Ambassador of Ireland were some of the guests invited by EU who handed out prizes to the winners.

A total of over 2,000 children registered although the race saw fewer finishers. The event took place at the Ethiopian Youth Sport Academy and two of the Directors Woldegebriel Mezgebo and Fekadu Mekuria also present gave out prizes to winners.

EU Children races conclude the “Triple Crown”, the three events GER staged on three consecutive Sundays. Last Sunday the EMA 5km race was staged in Addis Ababa in partnership with the Ethiopian Medical Association and two weeks ago the CCECC Hawassa Half Marathon was held in Hawassa.

Next race in the Great Ethiopian Run calendar is the IFH Relay Races with the slogan “Road Safety”. The relay in its 14th edition this year will be staged in the Olympia to Meskel Flower road and a total of around 150 teams are expected to take part in the Business, Government, NGO, Bank/Insurance, Hotels, Embassy, Media, Gym and Friends categories.
