The Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition; MICE East Africa which has been carried out twice annually in Addis Ababa may move to Kenya or Tanzania. According to discussions which were carried out at the Millennium Hall last Thursday and Friday suggestions were made to move the program. Low support and participation for the expo from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Investment Commission, Tourism organizations and other government institutions were the issues of concern.
At the second expo, carried out from June 8 – 11 a total of 45 international hosted buyers, and 180 international and local companies were involved but according to Ozzie Hospitality and Business Group that organized the MICE expo they have not gotten the support they need from various stakeholders.
Kumneger Teketel, Managing Director of Ozzie Hospitality and Business Group told Capital, “we have seen that in the last two expos private companies dominated the expo. Private companies can’t succeed in bringing more change to MICE, it needs government support. We cannot jump high unless we bring more international meetings into the country. We worked hard to carry out the two expos here but requests have already been offered from Kenya and Tanzania tourism stakeholders to host the next MICE expo.”
“We have accepted the request and we will soon announce which country will host the 3rd MICE expo.’’
According to Kumneger the hotel show will be continued to take place in Ethiopia.
Though the organizers have decided to move the expo from Ethiopia, tourism organizations promised to do more jobs in the MICE industry.
Yohannes Tilahun, the newly appointed CEO of Ethiopian Tourism Organization who opened the 2nd MICE East Africa Show and 5th hotel show said, “The things we made to enhance the MICE industry is so small but we firmly believe that there are a lot of things we will work on with Ozzie Hospitality to bring more changes’’
