Ethiopians are mourning the death of all time most popular Ethiopian footballer and legendary striker Asseged Tesfaye’s sudden death following a heart-related case after a week-end match with fellow friends. The legendary international striker who played for Dire Dawa Coca Cola, Ethiopia Medihn, Saint George and Ethiopia Bunna, was a player who transcended the boundary of clubs as well Jersey for he was equally beloved even among arch rivals.asseged-tesfaye
Emerging as one of the best strikers Ethiopia ever produced while at Bunna, which he joined in 1996, Asseged holds many records including his acrobatic goal against African giants Al Ahly in the African Champions League. He is also best remembered for becoming the first player to score five goals in a single CAF club championship match. He achieved this against St. Michel of Seychelles in the African Champions League, a record which holds to date.
Though famous for his achievement both at club and national team levels the Dire Dawa born Asseged will most likely be remembered as an easy going lad always ready to give a hand to anyone in need. Founding Assega Youth Sport Academy after his early retirement he pioneered the travelling of Youth and Junior teams going around the globe to take part in different tournaments. He led his teams travel to Norway, Sweden, and the USA, while he was in preparation for a journey to France, China, and Sweden.
Asseged is survived by his wife and daughter.
