Maaza Kitaw passes the baton

Maaza Kitaw, who led Berhan Insurance SC since its inception for two consecutive three year terms as chairperson of the board of directors, requested that the board nominees exclude her from the chairmanship election.
At the board meeting held last Wednesday May 31st, Maaza declined to run or accept a nomination for a third term as Berhan Insurance board chair, instead opting to continue service as a board member. At the meeting, Daniel Wondimu and Solomon Assefa were elected to lead the insurance company for the coming three years as a board chairperson and deputy respectively.
In addition to serving Berhan Insurance as the chairperson of the board of directors for the past six years, Maaza during her long career also served as an executive for other insurance companies. She is also the first and only female to serve as general manager of the National Lottery Administration of Ethiopia, a position she held for 19 years.
One of first women serving at the Ministry of Finance in a professional capacity, Maaza served as board president for three terms the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia. She also served as executive committee member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Africa region for 15 years. She is still serving Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization (JECCDO), as board chair. She was a member of several other boards including Pestalozzi Children’s Fund/Facilitators For Change Ethiopia, and Ethiopian Red Cross Society.
She has been, on various occasions commended for her dedication and hard work both professionally and socially including recognition for her leadership in community volunteer service organizations throughout her career.
The General Assembly held in December 2016 had nominated Maaza among the 9 board members. The National Bank of Ethiopia had approved all nine nominees in April 2017.
