No Sala, No Geta; EFF announces Player of Year short list

Although it is very hard to understand the process of the Ethiopia Football Federation’s nomination for Best Player and Best Goalkeeper of 2017, the three player list for each category became official. African champions League leading scorer Salahdin Said or record breaker Getaneh Kebede have somehow missed the list.
Despite spear heading Saint George to back to back titles bagging 15 goals and helping his team to a historic African Champions’ League group stage netting seven goals Saladin Said is ignored. The most instrumental player in Dedebit’s runner-up finish Getaneh Kebede is also forgotten. The striker who broke the 16 year 24 goal record held by target man Yordanos Abay, Getaneh did not convince the EFF that he was deserving.
The current Player of the Year, central defender Aschalew Tamene appears headed for a historic repeat. Aschalew’s solid performance in both the Premier and Champions League tournament made him a front runner while his team mate Menetesnot Adane and the midfielder who played a major role in the Sidama Bunna’s dream season, Mulualem Mesfin are the two other contenders.
Ugandan international Robert Odunkara, who won best goalie five years in a row, is poised for another accolade this time. He has 15 shutouts and helped Saint George to the Champion League group stage and another run away league title. Mekelakya’s strong boy between the woods Ashenafi Bekele who was cursed by for letting five goals get past him for the national team and Abel Mamo and Sidama Bunna’s Lealem Berhanu are also in contention for the award.
