Champion Saint George sweeps transfer market

Four of the most talked about hot cakes in 2016-17 Ethiopian Premier League season: Lealem Berhanu, Abdulkerim Mohammed, Gadisa Mebrate and Mulualem Mesfin signed with the defending champions Saint George. Nine players, including long serving Menyahel Tilahun and Tesfaye Alebachew left the club following their contract expiration.
Once again the champions appear to be enjoying a head start in signing the best home talents while Ethiopia Bunna and Dedebit FC have hardly been active in the market. It is a swift yet aggressive move from The Horse Men and sure to strengthen the side for the coming new season.
Snatching away full back Abdulkerim Mohammed from arch rivals Ethiopia Bunna and wrangling off popular defensive mid fielder Mulualem Mesfinaca Deco from Sidama Bunna are considered a major coup while signing attacking midfielder Gadisa Mebrate from Hawassa is all about his raw potential in need of a master crafts coach. Though Lealem Berhanu was the key player in Sidama Bunna’s amazing run last season he chose to join Saint George thus he will be a back up to five time EPL Goal Keeper of the Year Ugandan international Robert Odunkara.
Football fans and sports media are commenting that Lealem’s move to Saint George is a waste and once again the Ethiopian national team will have a goal keeper from the reserve bench. “Battling Odunkara for a number one spot might make him a better goalie,” others suggested. Although money involved in free agency is usually top secret with Saint George, sources claimed all four players signed a two year contract worth 2.5 million Birr.
