After three weeks of getting ready in Hawassa, followed by a rare international friendly match against Zambia, Ashenafi Bekele’s survival is at stake as the first stage of the 2018.
CHAN Cup final qualification against Sudan takes place today at Hawassa International Stadium. The winner of the two game series will go to Kenya to play in the Cup Final.
After a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Ghana in the African nations’ Cup qualification group stage opening match many accepted that Ethiopia was in over its head. The same is true for the away CHAN qualification first round 5-1 victory over Djibouti because they don’t have a history of football. Now with neighboring Sudan and in front of home supporters, no one wants to hear any excuses from Ashenafi. It is not just a potential win but a big win that could guarantee Ethiopia a place in the cup final.
The Waliyas returned home with a goal less draw with Zambia in Lusaka while Sudan lost 2-1 in the away friendly against Uganda. Though Ashenafi stayed unusually quiet and shy of the media since his return from Accra, playing Zambia to a goal less draw appears to show the team is progressing. However if they lose today it will be a big step backward and they run the risk of an early elimination.
