The record 14 time Ethiopian champions Saint George appointed a younger Portuguese Head Coach in the wake of Martin Nooji’s reign. Assistants Fasil Tekalegn and Zerihun Shengeta are expected to stay.
The 43 year old Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto is the latest foreigner to take over the hot seat at Saint George since 2004. Head coaches from Holland, Germany, Italy, England, Serbia, Bosnia and Brazil have been on the club. However, only Serbian Mitto and the Old Dutch master Martinus Nooji were notable. Mitto’s adventurous 4-1 home victory over Ghanaian giant Hearts of Oak and Nooji’s historic Champions’ League group stage spot were big accomplishments.
The appointment of a Portuguese, former non-professional league player, with brief experience in coaching, a FIFA Coaching Certificate, little knowledge of African football except for a short spell with two Angolan mid table sides: Recretivo di Caala and Recreativo do Libolo before going back home to second division FC Famalicao as Sport Director all opened a flood gate of speculations among football fans.
“His experience as Sporting Director as well football coach might help in restructuring the team into a modern football club but he might not last two years,” one critic suggested.
