The current president of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA) says he will not seek a second term when elections are held for the president and vice president positions in the next few weeks.
The president has served for three and a half years and would be eligible to run for a second term however he told Capital he is not interested.
“I have served the association and the business community but I want to leave the position to another person,” he said.
According to the rule, the chamber election has to be held every two years during the general assembly, however, the election that was expected to be held one year ago did not occur because the election process at the Amhara Chamber and Sectoral Association and the National Sectoral Association was determined to be illegal when they failed to follow the procedures set by the Ministry of Trade and the regional bureau. One of the major issues was that five people were allowed to run for more than two terms which is contrary to the rules. The election was then repeated. The national chamber has 18 members that represent two city administrations and the other regions.
Solomon, who represented the SNNP chamber, was elected in May 2014 to lead ECCSA.
The general assembly of the ECCSA takes place in late October in correlation with the annual international trade fare held at the Addis Ababa Exhibition Centre. They are making some adjustments with the schedule to save expenses, according to the president. Hosting the annual with the experienced board of the chamber is also the other major point to postpone the election process for few weeks.
