Hundreds of thousands of Techno and Itel phones are currently blocked from ethio telecom’s network and are unable to function due to the national Equipment Identity Registration System (EIRS) that was being implemented in the country.
According to Tecno Mobile, currently the company is working to register its products that are thousands in number and hopes to solve the problem for its customers soon.
“We are working very hard with ethio telecom as well as the Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority to fix the problem. Our customers have been very patient and we ask them to continue to be patient as we stabilize the situation,” said Chen Haiying, Brand Manager of Tecno Mobile Ethiopia.
According to the Brand Manager, it is not exactly known how many of the company’s products need to be registered. “We know there are many; our products are in millions in the market, it is difficult for us to say how many need to be registered but we will continue to identify and register them every day,” Haiying said.
It has been stated that the EIRS aims at modernizing the country’s telecom service meanwhile blocking illegal gadgets, that are capable of bypassing the service provider’s satellite network and enabling them to make international calls. The system is also designed to take out invalid mobile phones that are copies of originals or are of substandard production.
“Our products are well made and what happened is just a temporary issue. The system that ethio telecom is implementing with the registration, we believe, is very important. We will continue to work together with all the stakeholders,” said Haiying. He also stated that it is difficult to estimate the time frame in which the currently blocked phones will be able to function normally again.
