Following the successful women’s African nations soccer cup final qualification campaign, Ethiopian national women’s side “Lucy” draws in the cup final death group where six time African champion Nigeria reigns.
Eight national teams in two groups the 8th Nation’s women soccer cup final kicks-off on 28th October 2012 while the host nation Equatorial Guinea facing African representative at London Olympic South Africa in the opening match. Considered the easier group one brings together hosts Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Senegal and Democratic Republic of Congo with the hosts and South Africa hot favorites to reach to the knock out phase with the home side with an edge to win the group.
Group two dubbed the “Death group” comprises of the continent’s heavy weights Nigeria and Cameroon, last tournament cup finalists. The six time defending African champion Nigeria is hot favorite to finish group winner while the runner-up spot is open for one of the three sides Ethiopian Lucy, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. The group opening match between last tournament’s cup finalists Nigeria versus Cameroon is the tournament’s much anticipated showdowns. Third time in the nation’s women cup final Lucy’s opening match is against Ivory Coast with “Lucy” the underdog of the tournament has every potential to rattle the nest and return home with some pride if not medal. Head coach Abraham and assistant Birhanu Gizaw ready for new adventure, the players at the highest ever moral high ground, and women’s football in its best popularity, Lucy is at historical cross road to make the dream come true.
