In a groundbreaking move that celebrates the cultural and artistic richness of Ethiopia, the country has hosted its first-ever Chair Exhibition, highlighting the extraordinary talent of local youth and the national potential to reduce reliance on imported furniture.

The exhibition, organized by Debisha Interior Design, a leading Ethiopian design firm, was held at Hilton Hotel, drawing a diverse array of guests and industry stakeholders. The two-week-long event showcased an impressive collection of chairs, each a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the participating artists.

“The chair is a symbol of power and empowers leadership,” said Biruk Debebe, CEO of Debisha Interior Design. “This exhibition is not just about showcasing remarkable works of art; it’s about celebrating the innate talent of our young people and empowering them to shape the future of Ethiopia’s furniture industry.”

One of the primary goals of the exhibition was to bring innovation to chair design, moving away from conventional and redundant patterns. By providing employment opportunities and fostering a sense of community within the sector, the exhibition aimed to create a ripple effect that would ultimately reduce Ethiopia’s reliance on imported furniture products, thereby conserving valuable foreign exchange.

The exhibition was held in honor of the 5th anniversary of Debisha Interior Design, further underscoring the firm’s commitment to fostering a thriving, homegrown furniture industry in Ethiopia. The event was a resounding success, with over 500 participants, including organizations and individuals from the sector, showcasing their exceptional chair designs.
