ESL, banks aim for resolution on service charges

Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) is currently in discussions with financial institutions to negotiate a mutually beneficial agreement regarding bank service charges, which ESL has previously criticized as excessively high. As a state-owned deep-sea vessel operator, ESL has expressed concerns that the substantial service fees deducted by banks have adversely affected its revenue. Consequently, ESL is urging banks to lower their commission and service charges, particularly for international transfers. However, financial institutions have responded with dissatisfaction, arguing that ESL, which dominates Ethiopia’s import sector, has not sufficiently considered the costs that banks incur in generating foreign currency. Some banks have also noted that ESL should address its concerns with specific financial firms that impose higher charges rather than generalizing across all banks. This issue was recently discussed at a Bankers Association meeting attended by bank presidents, who highlighted...

 ET-302 Memorial: Spaces of...

In March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET-302 crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming the lives of 157 people from across the globe. In the aftermath of this tragedy, a dedicated team embarked on a mission to create a place of solace and remembrance. At the heart of this effort was architect Alebel Desta, whose vision shaped the ET-302 Memorial Park. More than just a monument, the memorial is a testament to resilience, healing, and the enduring power of memory. Alebel is also the architect behind ‘New beginnings’ urban art installation that was constructed for the Prime Minister’s inauguration ceremony on the 4th of October 2021 at Meskel square, which was installed by Ejig Design. Capital spoke with Alebel Desta about the project's profound journey, the challenges faced, and the story behind the recently published book, "Spaces of Remembrance," which documents the memorial's creation from concept to completion. Excerpts; Capital: Can you describe the founding principles and mission of Alebel Desta Consulting Architects and Engineers? Alebel Desta: At Alebel Desta Consulting Architects and...

Putting taste on the...

Tuberculosis remains a global health crisis, disproportionately affecting children in high-burden countries. For young patients battling drug-resistant strains of the disease, the arduous treatment regimens often feel as traumatic as the illness itself. But a groundbreaking study is offering a glimmer of hope. Dr. Graeme Hoddinott, a socio-behavioral scientist at Stellenbosch University and a fellow of the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE), led a project that put children's taste buds at the forefront of drug development, potentially revolutionizing pediatric TB care. Capital’s Groum Abate spoke with Dr. Hoddinott about the ChilPref ML study, its surprising findings, and its implications for improving treatment adherence and reducing suffering for young TB patients worldwide. Excerpts; Capital: Can you explain the significance of the ChilPref ML study in the context of pediatric TB treatment? Dr Graeme Hoddinott: The ChilPref ML study was about two of the drugs (Moxifloxacin and Linezolid) that are priority treatments for drug resistant TB. Typically, treatment of drug resistant TB, including among children, uses a combination of more than...
