Ethiopia achieves remarkable gains at UNGA73: MFA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ethiopia gained remarkable and extensive political and diplomatic achievements at the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly.
Ethiopia’s delegation was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Workneh Gebyehu, and included two State Ministers – Hirut Zemene and Professor Afeworki Kassu, among others.
In all, the Ministers participated in 50 meetings of bilateral and multilateral discussions were they promote Ethiopia’s policies and strategies and current reforms and change undergoing in the country and beyond.
To this end, Dr. Workneh addressed six high-level general debates, engaged with a number of world leaders, and meet with the Foreign Ministers of neighboring countries.
He signed a bilateral agreement with the Foreign Minister of Ecuador to establish political consultation forum and waiver of visas, according to Meles Alem, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two State Ministers participated in various high level discussions to advance and promote the national interest, he stated.
Dr. Workneh also briefed the General Assembly and other leaders on the extensive changes and reforms being undertaken in Ethiopia, and in particular on the process of normalization and rapprochement in Horn of Africa following the peace, friendship and cooperation agreements signed between Ethiopia and Eritrea that was recognized and lauded by international community.
The Spokesperson underlined that Ethiopia’s generosity in hosting refugees from neighboring countries, and its leading and active participation in international peace-keeping were praised during the General Assembly session.
During the Session, Ethiopia, in collaboration with other African countries, was also able to pursue and encourage conflict resolution through dialogue and support the strengthening of international peace keeping.
It also supported African Union standpoints that were consistent with international principles and standards to ensure the regional, continental and internationally shared responsibilities that Ethiopia championed and recognized during the Assembly deliberations.
