International Jazz Day festival celebrates Ethio-Jazz legend Teferi Assefa

The International Jazz Day Festival held on April 6, 2025, in the picturesque garden of the Belgian Embassy was a resounding celebration of Ethiopian jazz and its cultural legacy. The event, which brought together the finest Ethio-jazz artists for electrifying performances, paid tribute to Teferi Assefa, Ethiopia’s drumming legend, whose profound contributions have left an indelible mark on the music world.

While the performances captivated attendees, the sound system drew criticism for its subpar quality, dampening an otherwise spectacular evening.

Teferi Assefa remains one of the most irreplaceable figures in the history of Ethio-jazz. Known for his disciplined and masterful drumming, Teferi elevated Ethiopian jazz to new artistic heights. His “philosophical drumming” blended global jazz techniques with deeply Ethiopian rhythms, creating a unique soundscape that resonated with audiences across generations.

The tribute program celebrated Teferi’s unparalleled artistry and his immense contribution to music and culture. His ability to intertwine traditional Ethiopian elements with contemporary jazz made him a visionary in the genre. As a realist and innovator, Teferi’s legacy continues to inspire musicians and fans alike.

The festival featured performances by renowned Ethio-jazz artists who honored Teferi’s influence on Ethiopian music. From soulful melodies to rhythmic improvisations, the artists demonstrated the enduring power of Ethio-jazz as a medium for cultural expression and innovation.

Despite the sound system issues that drew criticism from attendees, the spirit of celebration remained intact as musicians delivered heartfelt performances in memory of Teferi Assefa.

Teferi Assefa’s contributions extended beyond performance; he was a mentor to aspiring musicians and an advocate for music education and cultural exchange. His work helped elevate Ethiopian jazz both locally and internationally, solidifying its place in global music history.

Born and raised in Addis, Teferi dedicated his life to exploring musical traditions and teaching others the art of drumming. His effervescent personality made him a beloved figure among peers and fans. Throughout his career, he was not only a performer but also a researcher committed to preserving Ethiopia’s rich musical heritage.
