Changsha, China

The 2025 China-Africa Film Week officially opened last week in Changsha, Hunan Province, marking a significant milestone in cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Africa. The highly anticipated event brought together leaders, filmmakers, and cinema enthusiasts from both continents, all united by a shared vision to deepen ties and foster collaboration within the film industry.

The opening ceremony, held on June 12 at the renowned Kichantow production facility, drew several high-profile Chinese and African celebrities and dignitaries. The event is widely seen as a key outcome of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, which has highlighted cinema as a vital bridge connecting distant nations and cultures.

In his welcome address, Liu Hongbing, head of the Minister Standing Committee and Director General of the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, underscored the enduring friendship between China and Africa. Quoting a Chinese proverb, he said, “Although mountains and seas are separated, hearts are intertwined,” emphasizing the strong bonds that unite the two regions. Liu also highlighted Hunan’s pivotal role in Chinese cinema and its growing partnerships with African filmmakers, noting that the Kichantow facility has hosted numerous African professionals for visits and collaborative discussions.

Qin Zhenguel, deputy director of the China Film Administration and Director of the Film Script Planning and Programming Center of the Central Committee Publicity Department, spoke about the strategic importance of film in national development and international exchange. He referenced President Xi Jinping’s many visits to Africa and his “sincere, honest, and friendly” approach to diplomacy, which has ushered China-Africa relations into a new historical era. Qin also welcomed international film delegations and young filmmakers to China, stressing the potential for innovation, talent, technology, and capital exchange.

Both speakers reiterated the event’s mission to promote cultural exchange and collaboration, not only in film production but also in talent development and storytelling. Themed “Crossing Continents and Oceans, Film Fosters Empathy,” this year’s Film Week aims to use the power of cinema to connect hearts and inspire mutual understanding.

The 2025 China-Africa Film Show features four distinct sections:

  • Reshaping Africa: The Revival of African Narratives
  • Highlighting South Africa: Cultural Perspectives of the Rainbow Nation
  • Crossing Cultures: Cinematic Journeys in Shared Histories
  • Presenting China: Oriental Art in a Global Context

These segments are designed to showcase African stories from both domestic and international perspectives, highlight Chinese artistic contributions, and celebrate the vision of a shared future between China and Africa.

Organizers say the Film Week will not only bring African stories to Chinese audiences but also provide a platform for filmmakers from both continents to collaborate, innovate, and learn from each other. As the event unfolds, it stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring power of cinema to bridge cultures, foster empathy, and build a community with a shared future.
