An Ethiopian couple based in Ohio, United States, has expanded its education support in Ethiopia with the inauguration of two digital libraries in Harar.
Lemma Getachew and Dr. Guenet Endale, through the Lemma and Dr. Guenet Foundation, opened the facilities at Harar Secondary (Junior) School and Ras Mekonnen Elementary School. The libraries contain more than 6,000 books and are expected to give thousands of students greater access to digital learning resources.
The inauguration brought together Harari Regional Government officials, education leaders and community representatives.
Edmond Tesfaye, the foundation’s Project and Strategic Planning Advisor, said the founders believe sustainable development starts with investing in young people. Dr. Guenet is among the pioneering female engineering lecturers at Addis Ababa University, while Lemma is a pharmacist, entrepreneur and real estate investor.
The foundation has previously donated more than 85 computers to the two schools, as well as supported clean water, sanitation and learning materials. It has also provided school supplies to more than 200 students.
