Africa’s statistics and geospatial leaders meet in Addis Ababa to make data count for development

The tenth session of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa) officially opened today at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, bringing together heads of national statistical offices, geospatial agencies, policymakers and development partners from across the continent.

The tenth StatCoM-Africa session is being held under the theme “Unleashing the Value of Data in Africa: making official statistics a true mirror of the continent”, is a timely opportunity to highlight the critical role of data and statistics in shaping policy, driving innovation and improving lives across the continent. The theme responds to a central challenge being experienced by member states: Africa is producing more data than ever, yet much of it is not integrated, trusted or used well enough to inform decisions and improve livelihoods.
