Mehmet Tevfik Nane new chair of the IATA Board

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that Pegasus Airlines Vice-Chairperson of the Board (Managing Director) Mehmet Tevfik Nane has assumed his duties as Chair of the IATA Board of Governors (BoG) for a one-year term, effective from the conclusion of the 78th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Doha, Qatar on 21 June. Nane is the 80th chair of the IATA BoG. He has served on the BoG since 2019. He succeeds JetBlue Airways CEO Robin Hayes, who will continue to serve on the BoG.
“I’m honored to take on this position at a time when the industry is emerging from our worst downturn. In addition to maintaining momentum toward re-opening the globe to travel and commerce, we have a very full agenda over the next 12 months. This includes achieving agreement at the ICAO Assembly on a Long Term Aspirational Goal for governments on aviation’s decarbonization, refining the pathway to Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050, and broadening participation in the 25by2025 gender diversity initiative,” said Nane.

Governments announce increased financial support to the global AIDS response

Addressing the UNAIDS Programme Coordination Board, governments have begun to pledge new investments to advance the end of AIDS.
The United Kingdom and Germany were among those pledging increased resources to support the work of UNAIDS, the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS.
The UK will increase funding to UNAIDS to £8 million per year, up from £2.5 million in 2021. The UK emphasised the importance of sufficient, predictable and timely funding towards enabling UNAIDS to deliver on its mandate.
Germany will increase its funding to UNAIDS this year to 6 million euros, up from 5 million euros before, in commendation of UNAIDS for its work to help maintaining HIV and other health services in conflict situations around the world, including in Ukraine and its neighbouring countries.
UNAIDS is the United Nation’s only Joint Programme, a unique model that brings together UNICEF, UNESCO, UN Women, UNHCR, World Food Programme, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, the World Bank and the World Health Organization. In this way, UNAIDS combines the range of technical expertise, cross-sectoral work and political reach that is needed to end the AIDS pandemic.

UNCDF collaborates with IBM on Digital Futures

UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) announced that it is working with IBM to address the digital skills gap by delivering digital learning to youth and women, as part of UNCDF’s Digital Futures initiative. IBM will support the implementation of Digital Futures through the IBM SkillsBuild initiative to offer digital and workforce skills training for students and job seekers.
The Digital Futures initiative will endeavor to deliver advanced digital and 21st century workforce skills in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Digital Futures is designed to mobilize an international digital and workforce skills partnership ecosystem to deliver digital skills training, consisting of public and private sector organizations as well as educational institutions and donors. The initiative will focus on delivering digital training to youth, women and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) students with a specific geographic emphasis on least developed countries (LDCs). Digital Futures will aim to train 50,000 youth, women and TVET students.
