Ethiopia faces a severe agricultural and humanitarian crisis driven by forecasted El Niño conditions that threaten the core of the nation’s food production. International organizations have issued warnings that climate anomalies could severely disrupt rural livelihoods and push millions toward acute food insecurity, particularly since the upcoming kiremt seasonal rains account for over 70 percent of national crop production.
In response to this looming emergency, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched an urgent appeal for USD 50 million. This funding aims to protect 4.66 million vulnerable individuals through a comprehensive framework combining anticipatory actions and early response interventions from June 2026 to March 2027.
The impending El Niño cycle follows a succession of recurrent climate shocks—including persistent droughts, erratic rainfall, flooding, and land degradation—which have already strained local food systems and depleted household resilience.
Historically, El Niño dramatically alters Ethiopia’s seasonal weather patterns, triggering suppressed rainfall and drought conditions across central, northern, northeastern, and eastern zones during the June–September kiremt season. Conversely, as FAO notes, southern and southeastern lowland areas face an elevated threat of heavy precipitation and severe flooding between October and December.
This dual threat places immense pressure on the nation’s agrifood sector, compounded by the fact that 82 percent of rural Ethiopian households rely directly on agriculture for their survival.
Projected below-average rainfall and elevated temperatures are expected to accelerate soil moisture depletion, reduce crop establishment and yields, limit pasture and water availability, and impose severe stress on livestock production.
Data from the Ethiopia Disaster Risk Management Commission indicates that more than 163 woredas are vulnerable, with 114 woredas—housing an estimated 9.3 million people—triggering formal requirements for anticipatory action.
According to FAO reports, 84 of these woredas across the Afar, Amhara, northern Somali, and Tigray regions have been designated as priority levels 1 and 2. Malnutrition remains a critical concern nationwide, with approximately 40 percent of children under the age of five suffering from stunting and 5 percent experiencing wasting.
Economic evaluations underscore the high value of pre-emptive funding, revealing that early investments in agricultural and livestock protection yield up to USD 3.60 in economic benefits for every USD 1 spent.
