Cambridge Academy Ethiopia Youth Football Teams Win International Trophy in Dubai

Cambridge Academy Ethiopia announced a significant milestone as its U11 football team secured the school’s first-ever international championship trophy at the prestigious ISG Dubai Gulf Winter Tournament held last week. This landmark victory not only highlights the academy’s commitment to youth sports but also marks a momentous occasion for football development in Ethiopia.

The annual tournament, hosted by Robin Sharpe, attracted top youth teams from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Cambridge Academy sent a delegation of 21 student-athletes and 12 parents, guided by school Director Professor Gemechis, Primary Head of Department Mr. Evans, and coaches Mr. Samson and Mrs. Hiwot.

The U9 squad demonstrated remarkable resilience and teamwork throughout the competition. Team Captain Eliad Mesfin led with two goals and exceptional leadership, while several promising Year 3 players showcased their skills during critical moments.

The U11 team began with a tough match against Real Madrid Academy from Spain, ultimately concluding in a 1–1 draw against CFFA Dubai, highlighted by a brilliant goal from Captain Kidus Tizazu. Their consistent performance secured them a spot in the knockout stage.

In the grand final against Swagger FC 2, the match ended in a tense draw, leading to a penalty shootout. Cambridge Academy’s penalty takers – Nahom Kidanemariam, Leul Elias, Azaria Dereje, Samuel Eyob, and Adiel Mulugeta – executed their shots with confidence. Goalkeeper Heriyakos Eyob made a crucial save during sudden death, setting the stage for Captain Kidus Tizazu to score the winning penalty and clinch the international title.

Following the victory, Professor Gemechis reflected on the achievement, stating, “This historic achievement demonstrates the extraordinary talent and discipline of our students. It also shows that Ethiopian youth can compete successfully on the global stage when given the right opportunities and support.”
