Ethiopian-born British author Mengistu Temtemie has published Walking With My Shadow: Growing Old in the Diaspora, a memoir exploring resilience, ageing and the experiences of the Ethiopian diaspora.
Mengistu, who was born in Ambo, Ethiopia, and now lives in Britain, draws on his personal journey to reflect on migration, identity, belonging and the challenges of growing older away from one’s country of birth.
The memoir examines how members of the diaspora navigate life between two cultures, carrying memories of home while building new lives abroad. It also explores the emotional and practical realities of ageing in a foreign country, including loneliness, family ties, cultural change and the search for meaning in later life.
Walking With My Shadow is available on Amazon.
The book adds to a growing body of diaspora literature examining how migration reshapes identity across generations, and how older migrants confront the realities of ageing far from the places they once called home.
