Africans’ bleak views of economic conditions match their escalating experience of poverty, Afrobarometer surveys find

0

Africans’ concerns about economic management have surged in recent years, placing the issue second only to unemployment among the top priorities that citizens want their government to address, the latest Afrobarometer (www.Afrobarometer.org) Pan-Africa Profile (https://apo-opa.co/3KZy2BB) shows.

Based on surveys in 39 African countries between late 2021 and mid-2023, the analysis shows that citizens offer increasingly gloomy appraisals of their country’s economic condition and their personal living conditions, and fewer than half expect things to improve in the near future.

In growing numbers, Africans report going without basic necessities such as a cash income, medical care, food, and water. In most surveyed countries, majorities are experiencing moderate or high lived poverty, and citizens’ ratings on key indicators of their government’s economic performance are bleak and getting worse.

Key findings

On average across 39 countries surveyed between late 2021 and mid-2023, unemployment and management of the economy top the list of the most important problems that Africans want their government to address, along with health (Figure 1).

Across 31 countries surveyed consistently since 2014/2015, the proportion of citizens citing management of the economy among their top priorities has more than doubled.

About two-thirds (65%) of citizens assess their country’s economic condition as “fairly bad” or “very bad” (Figure 2). More than half (52%) also hold gloomy views of their personal living conditions.

On average across 31 countries surveyed consistently since 2014/2015, negative reviews of the country’s economic condition have risen by 15 percentage points, and those of personal living conditions by 7 points (Figure 3).
Citizens are divided as to whether economic conditions will get better (40%) or worse (35%) over the next 12 months.

Eight in 10 respondents (81%) say they or a family member went without a cash income at least once during the previous year, including 43% who did so “many times” or “always” (Figure 4).

Two-thirds (65%) report having gone without medical care at least once, and about six in 10 suffered shortages of food (59%) and water (56%).

Six in 10 Africans (61%) experienced moderate or high lived poverty during the past year.

Moderate-to-high lived poverty has been increasing and affected majorities in all but eight of 39 surveyed countries, including more than eight in 10 citizens in Congo-Brazzaville (86%), Mauritania (84%), Niger (84%), and Cameroon (81%).

Only a quarter (26%) of Africans say their governments are doing “fairly well” or “very well” in managing the economy (Figure 5).

Even fewer give their governments passing marks for their efforts to improve the living standards of the poor (22%), create jobs (20%), narrow income gaps (16%), and keep prices stable (12%).

Afrobarometer surveys

Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life. Nine survey rounds in up to 42 countries have been completed since 1999. Round 9 surveys (2021/2023) cover 39 countries.

Afrobarometer’s national partners conduct face-to-face interviews in the language of the respondent’s choice with samples of 1,200-2,400 adults that yield country-level results with margins of error of +/-3 to +/-2 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

FDH Bank Malawi bags US$15-million Afreximbank loan facility

0

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com) has signed an agreement to provide FDH Bank Plc. Malawi with a US$15-million amortizing term loan facility to support the manufacturing sector, exporters and importers in Malawi.

Under the terms of the agreement, signed during the just-concluded Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2024) in Nassau, capital city of The Bahamas, FDH Bank will deploy the proceeds of the facility to the financing of trade transactions of its clients involved in manufacturing, exports and imports.

Mr. Haytham El Maayergi, Executive Vice President of Global Trade Bank signed the agreement on behalf of Afreximbank while Mr George Chitera, the Deputy Managing Director for FDH Bank Plc, signed the facility agreement on behalf of FDH Bank Plc. Malawi.

In comments on the agreement, Mr. El Maayergi said: “This facility will support the export of value-added commodities and the manufacturing capacity of Malawi and is consistent with our strategy of financing exports which also enhances the foreign exchange earning capacity of countries.”

Mr. El Maayergi added that, through its intermediated lending approach, the facility would help in bridging the financing gap in the continent and would also strengthen the capacity of the financial intermediaries to support corporates with financing products and capacity building.

On his part, Mr. Chitera noted: “As a Bank, we believe in our ability and potential to grow businesses and that is why we leverage on our strategic partnerships such as with Afreximbank and other like-minded institutions to increase our capacity to create bespoke financial solutions which will reshape and drive Intra and Extra African Trade. This US$15 million Medium Term loan facility is one of the major steps towards that goal.”

The facility provides offshore funding, required for the high importation needs of various critical sectors within the economy.

Hosted by the government of the Bahamas, AAM2024, which was combined with the third AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF2024), was held in Nassau, The Bahamas from 12 June to 15 June.

Alfa Romeo Junior VELOCE debuts new 280-CV 100% electric motor

0

A few days ahead of road tests, the development of Junior VELOCE – a version equipped with specific “made by and for” Alfa Romeo solutions (www.AlfaRomeo.com/) – is coming to an end; The dynamic development has been worked on by the same Italian team of Alfa Romeo engineers who have created unique projects such as the 4C, 8C, Giulia&Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Giulia GTA, and the current ongoing development of the 33 Stradale; Alfa Romeo Junior VELOCE makes its debut in the road with the 100% electric motor that delivers 280 CV / 207 kW of power and 345 Nm of torque.

A few days ahead of the dynamic debut of Alfa Romeo Junior, where insiders will be testing the brand’s new compact sports car at the Balocco Proving Ground (Vercelli province), the Alfa Romeo engineering development team has finalized the dynamic development of the project. Tests have shown the output of the electric motor to be 280 hp, in line with the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale VELOCE models.

Reserved for the international trade press and in advance of the type-approval phase, Alfa Romeo Junior will be on the test bench in its 100% electric 280 CV / 207-kW version, on the same circuits where the Italian team of Alfa Romeo engineers validated the dynamic design targets.

The new electric motor will be making its debut in the new compact sports car, the sportiest version in the line-up in this configuration.

A one-of-a-kind compact car with a pure, recognizably Alfa Romeo sportiness

Not only is the new motor a specific feature, every development in the design has also been focused on maximizing performance, road handling, and pure driving pleasure:

Ad-hoc calibration to make the steering the most direct in the segment (14.6) and extremely precise, to enhance its exceptional road holding qualities; the sports suspension has been lowered by 25 mm; the front and rear anti-roll bars are extra sporty to guarantee quick cornering with a high level of grip; the braking system has front discs of over 380 mm with four-piston monobloc calipers; the Torsen differential offers the best possible traction in all conditions. The high-performance 20” tires are also specific to electric vehicles and offer extensive levels of grip.

Plus, the targets and objectives are as they always are for every Alfa Romeo: best-in-class handling and driving dynamics. Therefore, the same team of engineers who have created unique projects such as the 4C, 8C, Giulia&Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Giulia GTA and the current ongoing development of the 33 Stradale has been called on for this project.

The 20-km “Langhe” circuit, available for the first time

The event is due to take place at the Balocco Proving Ground, where industry expert drivers will be testing the highest-spec version in the Junior line-up as part of the phase ahead of type approval.

For the first time, the international press will be provided access to the entire configuration of the “Langhe” circuit. A genuine exclusive: the entire route of over 20 km has never been made available to external drivers who are not members of the Alfa Romeo development team. All the Alfa Romeo road cars from the last few decades have been subjected to development testing on the same track, in exactly the same place where the Alfa Romeo Junior will be on the test benches. Likewise, the historic, unforgettable “Alfa Corse” team also tested and fine-tuned right here the racing cars that competed in international motor racing (F1 – DTM – Super Turismo).
