L’Initiative to support three civil society organisations to improve the fight against tuberculosis and malaria in Ethiopia

On June 27, the French program L’Initiative, along with its partners Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), APOPO, Health Development and Anti-Malaria Association (HDAMA) and REACH Ethiopia, have launched three projects to support the fight against tuberculosis and malaria in Ethiopia, during a ceremony hosted at the French Embassy in Addis-Abeba. This ceremony was the occasion for L’Initiative to which Ethiopia is eligible since 2017 to strongly reaffirm its commitment to support Ethiopian civil society actors in the health sector, with a view to uphold their efforts in the fight against the three pandemics and to strengthen their capacities. The projects’ launching was attended by H.E. Rémi Maréchaux, French Ambassador in Ethiopia, Dr Hiwot Solomon, Disease prevention and control lead executive officer at the Ministry of Health, Eric Fleutelot, technical director of L’Initiative, as well as the executive directors of the partners organisations and the portfolio manager of the Global Fund.

Operating Theatre Dedicated To Children Commissioned at Yekatit 12 Hospital

Global charities Smile Train and Kids Operating Room (KidsOR) have today commissioned the newly refurbished children’s dedicated theatre at YEKATIT 12 Hospital.
Thanking the two organizations, Minister of Health, Her Excellency Dr Liya Tadesse said: This being one of the largest hospitals in the country, we are proud of the relationship with Smile Train and KidsOR which brings safe and quality paediatric services to the community.”
Smile Train Senior Program Assistant East Africa Dr. Bethel Mulugeta acknowledged the need to prioritize surgical care for children, noting that timely intervention enhances the quality of life of the children. “Children who grow up with untreated congenital malformations such as cleft or club foot may face stigma and discrimination, unable to socialize in the community. Our collaboration with KidsOR to have pristine equipment and vibrant artwork helps the children feel more comforted and boosts the morale of the medical teams when treating children. Since our partnership with Yekatit 12 started in 2006, we have transformed the lives of over 2,047 children with cleft,” noted Dr. Bethel.

Enhancing the international tax communication in Ethiopia

Huawei Ethiopia in collaboration with Ethiopian ministry of Finance and Ministry of Revenue organized a two days tax workshop in the purpose of strengthening the tax communication in Ethiopia.
In the workshop held from June 21–22, 2023, high-level international experts conducted In-depth discussions focused on the countries and international tax experiences. E-commerce taxation, transfer pricing, tax collection and management practices in China, and tax policy trends in Ethiopia are among the topics discussed during the workshop.
In the opening Huawei Ethiopia & Congo rep office CFO Zhangxiao said that the workshop is organized to discuss on international tax communication and to share China’s and Huawei’s experience in this regard.
Ministry of Finance Legislative advisor Wassihun Abate on his side also praised Huawei for organizing such workshop that brings some advance tax experience to the country.
In the workshop more than 16 directors and advisors from MoF and MoR participated. And after the workshop some of them mentioned that they got new international experience regarding taxation.

In Paris, African Leaders call for affordable financing to recover economies and put the SDGs back on track

Developing country leaders rallied in Paris, highlighting the urgency for reform of the global financial architecture to counteract economic, environmental and social adversities, and to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Predictable, affordable and sustainable financing is critical to allowing African countries to get back on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Acting Executive Secretary, Antonio Pedro, said at the Sustainable Debt Coalition event organized on the margins of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris.
The Summit was convened by French President Emmanuel Macron to develop a roadmap to ease the debt burdens of low-income countries while freeing up more funds for development and climate financing.
The Sustainable Debt Coalition, launched by the Government of Egypt at COP27, aims to address critical financing challenges faced by emerging markets and developing economies, particularly the debilitating impacts these have on climate action and development. It introduces a fresh consultation pathway that intersects debt, climate, and developmental concerns, fostering dialogue for innovative solutions.
