Kenenisa, Tirunesh lead Cross Country Legends

0

Kenenisa Bekele
Titles: 2001 (U20), 2002 (long and short), 2003 (long and short), 2004 (long and short), 2005 (long and short), 2006 (long and short), 2008 (long)
Accumulating a record-breaking 27 gold medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships during an unprecedented period of success, it is doubtful whether the Ethiopian’s total will ever be surpassed.
Announcing his arrival on the global stage aged 18 by taking silver in the senior men’s short course race at the 2001 World Cross Country Championships in Ostend, he returned the following day to win the U20 race by a 33-second margin.
This was only the start as Bekele went on to complete a scarcely believable five successive senior long and short course doubles (from 2002-2006) before completing a record-breaking sixth long course crown in 2008 in Edinburgh.
Grete Waitz
Titles: 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983
Arguably the first global star of women’s distance running – which in the 1970s was still in very much an embryonic state – the pioneering Norwegian set world records on the track, dominated on the road and left a huge legacy at the World Cross Country Championships.
Claiming the first of four successive senior women’s titles in Glasgow 1978, she regularly trounced the opposition and claimed victory by a record-breaking 44-second margin at the 1980 edition in Paris.
Waitz notched up a fifth crown in 1983 and added bronze medals in 1982 and 1984 to her proud record.
John Ngugi
Titles: 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992
The first man to establish a genuine dynasty of success at the World Cross Country Championships, the enigmatic Kenyan will be remembered as a true legend of the event.
Claiming his first victory in the senior men’s race in 1986 in Neuchatel, Switzerland, Ngugi then went on to retain his title for the following three editions. His victory in 1989 in cloying mud in Stavanger, where he triumphed by almost half a minute, is regarded as his signature triumph.
He added further gloss to his World Cross record by adding a fifth title in the Boston snow in 1992.
Tirunesh Dibaba
Titles: 2003 (U20), 2005 (long and short), 2006, 2008
During an extraordinary career which boasts three Olympic titles and five World Championship track crowns, the stylish Ethiopian has long proved the master of the seemingly impossible. And as her record of eight individual medals (five gold and three silver) proves, she has been just as impressive at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
Winning her first medal, a silver, aged just 16 in the U20 race at the 2002 edition in Dublin, she returned 12 months later to strike U20 gold in Lausanne.
As a senior she claimed a trio of long course victories in 2005, 2006 and 2008 but perhaps her finest hour came in St Etienne 2005 when completing the long and short course double.
Paul Tergat
Titles: 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 (long), 1999 (long)
The Kenyan distance great may have frequently just missed out on the ultimate track prizes courtesy of his nemesis Haile Gebrselassie, but during the second half of the 1990s he was invincible over the country (a surface, interestingly, Gebrselassie could never master).
Possessing a long loping stride, Tergat claimed the first of his world cross-country titles in Durham in 1995 to kick-start a sequence of five successive men’s senior titles. His streak was finally brought to an end in 2000 – when he had to settle for bronze – but by then his legacy had already been assured.

Sebeta tops 1st round Super League Group “B”

0

Sebeta, which is the only unbeaten team, finished the first round on top of the Group “B” table in goal differences while Ethio-Electric was threatened by a shocking away defeat to remain five points behind the leaders.
Sebeta’s dream of returning to the upper tier appears to be on the right course as the team is so consistent that it finished the first round with six wins, five draws and no defeats. The record shows that Sebeta has a strong strike force. They have scored 17 goals and their defense has conceded only seven. They beat Woldya at their house even though their goaltender was red carded 23 minutes into the game. Sebeta should be promoted to the Premier League.
Second in the table in goal differences Legetafo-Legedadi is a strong contender for promotion. They boasted an impressive record with seven wins, two draws and two defeats. Legetafo’s has a strong defense. They have only given up seven goals. However, they to stay on course they need to improve their offense.
Ethio-Electric was expected to be among the strong promotion contenders until it faced an upset at the hands of 5th place Wello-Kombolcha. Critics suggest that three defeats in the first round were costly. It will be hard for them to turn things around unless a more determined and organized Electric appears in the second round. Five wins, three draws and three defeats Electric is third with 18 points.
The Federal Police sits fourth with 17 points followed by Wello-kombolcha (16), Woldya (14), Gelan (14), Dessie, Burayu and Akaki each with twelve points and Axum in relegation zone having 11 points. Amhara Water Works is at the bottom of the table with just six points.

Mekelakya extends Dawit Estifanos’ contract

0

Veteran play maker Dawit Estifanos landed a lucrative one year contract extension with knock-out holders Mekelakya. Dawit played for eight different teams including Ethiopia Bunna, Ethio-Electric and Dedebit in over a decade in the Premier League.
With over ten years in the upper tier, controversy surrounded Dawit Estifanos, but that appears to be getting better thanks to the downslide of Ethiopian Football standards. Though slow and sometimes completely out of form, he can really dictate the outcome of any showdown like Ethiopia Bunna’s 1-0 shocking defeat to Mekelakya three weeks ago. That defeat triggered the sacking of French Coach Didier Gomes as well the popular opposition against Board Chairman Lieutenant Fekade Mamo. This came down to Dawit’s exceptional brilliance in that single game.
Though the amount for the contract extension is not public insiders disclosed Dawit is going to collect a 125,000 Birr after tax monthly salary. According to sources, under pressure Coach Seyoum Kebede was the main man behind the contract agreement. “I assure you Seyoum has a hard time to manage Dawit. But he knows how influential the player is and knows he has seen the fall of a number of Coaches who stood against Dawit,” a former national team player suggested.
With four wins, five draws and six defeats Mekelakya is currently 11th in the league table with 17 points just six points clear of the relegation zone. After conceding the highest amount of goals in the first round at 27, the Army side’s attack is dependent on one member of the strike force, Menyelu Wondemu who scored 11 of the 19 goals and thus sits on top of the leading scorers’ chart.
