Celebrating 98 Years of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army: Strengthening China-Africa Bonds

By our staff reporter

The Sheraton Hotel was abuzz with energy as dignitaries, diplomats, and guests gathered to commemorate the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The event showcased speeches from prominent figures who highlighted the PLA’s historic contributions and underscored the growing partnership between China and Africa.

Ambassador Jiang Feng, recently appointed head of the Chinese Mission to the African Union, delivered a keynote address emphasizing peace, cooperation, and shared development as cornerstones of China-Africa relations. Reflecting on his extensive experience spanning two decades across the continent, Ambassador Jiang expressed enthusiasm for strengthening ties from his new base in Addis Ababa.

“The PLA has played a pivotal role in securing national independence and advancing global peace,” he remarked. “China has never initiated any war or conflict. We stand firmly against unilateralism and hegemonism, advocating for cooperation that benefits all.”

Ambassador Jiang drew attention to several collaborative frameworks—the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative—that form the foundation for rising China-Africa cooperation amid global uncertainties. He highlighted that while China pursues the goal of building a great modern socialist country, Africa is progressing steadily toward its Agenda 2063 vision for inclusive growth and development.

The recent Beijing Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit was cited as a milestone event aiming to deepen economic and security partnerships. Alongside Ambassador Jiang’s remarks, Senior Colonel Guo Baojian, Defence Adviser to the African Union, spotlighted the PLA’s extensive contributions to peacekeeping missions worldwide and its strengthening role in Africa’s regional security.

Drawing inspiration from both ancient Chinese philosophy and African proverbs, Ambassador Jiang underscored the crucial theme of unity. “Unity is strength, division is weakness,” he reminded attendees, urging continued collaboration between the PLA and African armed forces to address shared challenges.

As the celebration unfolded, there was a palpable sense of optimism about the future of China-Africa relations. Delegates voiced hopes for expanded cooperation focused on economic growth, peace, and mutual prosperity in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Jiang expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the African Union and reaffirmed China’s commitment to a shared future. “Together, with the powerful force of over 2.8 billion Chinese and African people, we can create a brilliant future,” he said.

The reception not only commemorated the PLA’s rich legacy but also highlighted the enduring and evolving partnership between China and Africa as both regions seek stability and prosperity in an interconnected world.
