TikTok launches election hub in Ethiopia ahead of Monday Vote

By our Staff Reporter

TikTok has unveiled a series of integrity measures ahead of Ethiopia’s general election on 1 June 2026, including a dedicated in-app Election Centre in Amharic developed in partnership with the National Election Board of Ethiopia.

The platform’s election taskforce, comprising experts in misinformation, cybersecurity and deceptive behaviour, is leading the effort alongside advanced moderation tools and local language moderators. The Election Centre provides users with reliable information on voting, key dates, and tips to recognise false content.

“Our in-app election centre has authoritative information about the Ethiopian elections,” said Tokunbo Ibrahim, TikTok’s head of government relations for Sub-Saharan Africa. Labels and search banners now link directly to the centre.

The platform disclosed that TikTok prohibits content that could mislead voters or disrupt electoral processes, and bans paid political advertising. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the platform removed over 1.8 million videos violating its Community Guidelines in Ethiopia, with 99.9% taken down proactively.

It addd that it works with fact-checking organisation Code for Africa. Separately, TikTok and the Editors Guild of Ethiopia trained 10 journalists from five regions as part of a National Disinformation Taskforce initiative.

“We commend TikTok’s proactive engagement with media professionals during this election period,” said Derese Nigatu, the Guild’s executive director.

It said TikTok continues to publish updates through its Global Election Integrity Hub as the election approaches.
