Muferiat Kamil has been elected as chairperson of the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM), replacing Shiferaw Shigute.
She was elected at the emergency meeting of the Central Committee of SEPDM held on Monday June 25.
Muferihat is the current Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament.

Ethiopia officially starts crude oil production test
Ethiopia officially started crude oil production test in Ogaden region, Ethiopian Somali regional state.
Chief Administrator of the regional state, Abdi Mohammed, and Government Communication Affairs Office Minister, Ahmed Shide, and other senior government officials attended the launching ceremony.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said that the Chinese Poly-GCL Petroleum Investment Limited will start producing 450 barrels of crude oil in a day as of June 28, 2018.
Regarding natural gas extraction, the Premier said construction of a pipeline will be started next September to export gas via Djibouti.
The construction of the pipeline will take two years.
Trial export of gas will earn Ethiopia 1 billion US dollars annually. However, it will obtain 8 billion US dollars per annum once it begins export with its full capacity, he said.
The agreement to explore natural gas was sign between Ethiopia and Poly-GCL in 2013.
HPR approves law on granting amnesty
The House of People’s Representatives (HPR), in its regular meeting on Thursday June 28, approved a law on procedures of granting amnesty.
The law grants amnesty for those convicted of political offences, treasons and inciting conflicts if they applied for amnesty within the time specified in the decree.
The law establishes a board that is accountable to the Prime Minister.
Board members will be the Federal Attorney General, Minister of Women and Children Affairs, Commissioner General of Federal Police Commission, Director General of Federal Prison Administration and a judge from Federal High Court as well as two individuals to be assigned by the Prime Minister.
INSA, Defense Ministry discuss ways to reinforce cooperation
Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and the Ministry of Defense discussed ways to reinforce their cooperation in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information.
Speaking at the discussion, Lieutenant General Hassen Ibrahim, Head of Information Department at the Ministry of Defense, underscored the need to modernize the process of gathering, analyzing and disseminating information.
As the two institutions work for common goal, they will strengthen their cooperation by filling existing gaps and resolving problems, he said.
Director General of INSA, Temesgen Tiruneh, for his part said his agency will work in collaboration with various institutions under the auspices of the Defense Ministry and other stakeholders.
Efforts will be made to bridge the gap between the two institutions in the exchange of information regarding the implementation and management of projects, he said
